History
The digits 1492 that can be read on the façade under the
gable of the roof indicate the origin of the building. What surely used to
be an humble dwelling for shepherds , to spend summers only, was extended
over the years and by 1600 already inhabited all year through.
Till the
beginning of the ski-period, around 1900, the "Alte Goldene Berg" was a
stately farm house with stalls and a big barn. However, before the 1st.world
war the owners turned the place into a lodge which was used by the very
first hikers on mountain tours.
In 1928 the owners were compelled to auction the estate .It was bought by
the German family Hammerbacher and given the name "Goldener Berg". Due to
the incredible flow of guests from Europe, a goods train was installed from
the local road in Lech to the "Goldenen Berg". The road to Oberlech was not
motorable but with the help of the goods train a hotel with a capacity of 42
beds could be built around 1930 which was inaugurated at Christmas time. All
available beds in the vicinity were booked too so that the restaurant of
"Goldenen Berg" entertained 130 guests in 3 shifts. Also, the name "Oberlech" was created in 1930. The hotel was very popular and experienced a boom
till the 2nd.world war.
Because of German ownership, the "Goldenen Berg" was placed under
sequester after the war till 1955. No investments could be initiated
hindering development, subsequently Oberlech lost it's connection to a
striving neighbour Lech. In 1960 an annex was built but the lack of capital
lead to the final loss which was the gain of family Pfefferkorn, the new
owner's of the estate. It was the fortunate foresight of Johann Pfefferkorn
which made him buy this desolate house probably due to it's unique location.
A lot of hard work was put in and large investments were made to achieve the
standard of the hotels in the vicinity.
From 1965 till 1968 the hotel was managed by the eldest son Günther
Pfefferkorn after which the hotel was given over to Franz Pfefferkorn who
graduated from the school of hotel management and gathered experience abroad
in England, France, Bermudas and the USA. It was vital to solve the
unimaginable daily problems this dilapidated house presented. Only after
years of annual investments it was possible to renovate and refurbish the
kitchen, the restaurant, the rooms, the heating etc. Then in 1980, Gucky and
Franz Pfefferkorn made the decision to extend the hotel by a further 40
beds. From the marriage of Gucky and Franz, 2 daughters, Claudia and
Daniela were born. The 3rd daughter, Tina was born in April 1980.
